Valance for a Christmas

In October, my mother called to ask for my help with selecting paint colors for her dining room and kitchen. I was more than happy to help!

About a week later, I met her at her house with paint samples. By this time she had decided that she wanted a paint color to help her draperies pop off the wall. Her dedication and fun desire to decorate motivated me to help her find the perfect color. While we were having fun selecting colors, was when I noticed the old store bought curtains hanging on the kitchen window. At the window she had unlined curtains, falling to the same length of the window ceil, gathered on the right side and tied back. These curtains had no fullness which means they were not made to fit her window.

With the holidays quickly approaching, I decided I wanted to give her a beautiful valance for her kitchen window. I previously designed and selected fabric for her draperies in her dining and family room a few years prior. For this project I wanted to work with my mom just as I do with my clients to give her exactly what she wanted from the fabric to the treatment style.

Valance & Drapery

For this project, my mom was completely involved. While selecting paint colors we looked through my portfolio to study recent valance styles for projects that we made in our workroom as well as browsed through Houzz projects looking at valance styles. She told me her thoughts on what she liked and disliked on the styles as I sketched up a few different options. She decided on this gathered shaped valance (seen in pictures). After we determined the style it was easy to move forward with selecting the fabric because we knew we needed to find something to match the draperies she already has up as well as the paint colors that we selected.

Then for Christmas, I surprised my mom with a new custom kitchen valance! After install, my mom said, “I love how the valance is the focal point to the kitchen. As soon as I walk in the  back door it’s the first thing I notice.”

I can tell you, the valance lighten the room and has made it a welcoming space. I am so happy that my mom loved her gift. We had such a great time picking out and selecting fabrics together that I am sure she will want to work on another project together.
